Masala Chaas Recipe

Masala Chaas, also known as spiced buttermilk, is a classic Indian summer drink that’s both refreshing and good for digestion. Made with curd, water, and a blend of Indian spices, this drink is a perfect post-meal cooler and an everyday essential during hot weather. How to make Masala Chaas

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh curd (plain yogurt)

  • 1.5 cups chilled water

  • ½ tsp roasted cumin powder

  • ¼ tsp black salt

  • Salt to taste

  • 1 green chilli (optional, chopped)

  • 5–6 fresh mint leaves

  • Few coriander leaves

  • A pinch of hing (asafoetida)


Directions

  • Step 1: In a blender or mixing jar, combine curd and chilled water. Blend until it becomes smooth and frothy.
  • Step 2: Add roasted cumin powder, black salt, regular salt, and a pinch of hing.
  • Step 3: Add chopped green chilli (optional), mint leaves, and coriander leaves. Blend again for a few seconds.
  • Step 4: Pour into glasses. Sprinkle some roasted cumin powder on top and garnish with mint.
  • Step 5: Serve immediately chilled or refrigerate for 15–20 minutes before serving.

Tips for Perfect Chaas

  • For a more flavorful version, you can also temper mustard seeds and curry leaves in ghee and add to the chaas.
  • Always use chilled water or refrigerate the drink before serving.
